Dr. Michael S. Johnson is a recently retired Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. In this position, he supported the Commission Vice Presidents, maintained Commission policies, and served as the staff liaison for approximately 20 institutions. Prior to accepting this position, Dr. Johnson served as a SACSCOC Vice President for seven years. While at SACSCOC, Dr. Johnson has been part of over 175 institutional visits.
From 1986 until 2005, Dr. Johnson was at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. Spring Hill is one of the 28 Jesuit Colleges and Universities in North America. While at Spring Hill, Dr. Johnson served in several capacities, including professor of economics, director of the MBA program, chair of the Division of Business and Management, the elected chair of the faculty assembly, chair of the rank and tenure committee, and for his last four years, associate vice president for academic affairs. Duties in the latter role included oversight of campus institutional effectiveness and institutional research efforts, accreditation liaison with SACSCOC, chair of the graduate council, and development of budget and enrollment forecasting models. Before joining Spring Hill College, Dr. Johnson held faculty positions at the University of New Orleans and at Cornell University.
Dr. Johnson holds an A.B. degree in economics from Davidson College, and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has two grown sons and two granddaughters. He now lives in the north Georgia mountains, and enjoys the sunsets from his back deck.
